Your visit to Avalon is incomplete without a visit to the Avalon Casino, perched on the northern tip of the crescent-shaped harbour, one of the most beautiful buildings in the nation and the longtime symbol of Catalina itself.
On the ground floor is the Catalina Island Museum which has a collection that totals an amazing 150,000 items. It will take you to the island's history, stretching back to its earliest Gabrielino Indian settlers.
Santa Catalina Island's "Airport in the Sky" is 10 miles from the city of Avalon, and is accessible by shuttle bus, bicycle, on foot, or via chartered small plane. Its single runway was constructed by blasting and leveling two adjacent peaks, then using the resulting debris to fill in the gaps.
