Safety Harbor resort and spa: history of wellness and fitness with fun
The Safety Harbor Resort and Spa has an area of 50,000 square foot and has a wide array of programs for pampering, toning and relaxing mind and body. It has a long history of promoting wellness and fitness. As early as the 1900s, Safety Harbor became known as the Health Giving City with its five different springs being identified as Beauty, Stomach, Liver, Kidney and Pure Water Springs.
Water from these Springs were bottled in five-gallon jugs and shipped worldwide as demands from health conscious people kept increasing. Dr. and Mrs. Alben Jansik, bought them and rebuilt the facilities, recognized the healing powers of the springs. But then later in 1945, she sold the springs and sanatorium to Dr. Salem H. Baranoff. He in turn, opened the area to overnight visitors and turned it into a health spa called Safety Harbor Spa. Today, the Safety Harbor resort and spa is a historical landmark, declared so by the U.S. Department of Interior in 1964 and a Florida Heritage Landmark in 1997.
